                       Short Courses for Deafened People

What are short courses for deafened people?

In response to requests from people who have attended our intensive rehabilitation programmes, we have developed short courses for deafened people.

The two day course is intended to be a refresher course, covering many issues such as coping and communication strategies, confidence-building, and relaxation techniques. There are also opportunities to find out about new technology.

Communication support is provided throughout so everyone can follow what is being said and can actively participate in all sessions.

   Are partners and family included?

Yes, people are encouraged to bring partners or a friend as the course is as much for them as it is the deafened person. But it is perfectly possible to come alone if that is preferred. There are usually about 12 -14 people on each course.

   Where do courses run?

Courses are residential and take place in different parts of the UK. The venues are carefully selected hotels ensuring that the environment is comfortable and relaxed.

   Who pays?

We apply to the NHS for funds to cover the costs of the intensive rehabilitation programme as well as the short course (which also includes partner and residential costs); we make all the arrangements.

Participants cover only their travel expenses.

   How do I apply?

Please contact us for more information at or by letter/telephone/text/fax.

Cathy Cobbold who runs the courses says ... I know from my own experience that life can be difficult if you live with an acquired profound hearing loss 24/7; sometimes you need a bit of help.

Our courses are about helping people cope better with every day living – communication, family relationships, work, confidence, and feeling good about yourself. It’s also about spending some time away from ordinary concerns and feeling relaxed in a friendly and comfortable setting.

The best thing about the courses is the chance to look at the problems and find answers and solutions together. It’s amazing how powerful and effective this approach can be.
